At the 20th Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism Awards in Lagos, Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka directly challenged President Bola Tinubu over his handling of regional security and the use of state resources for privileged individuals.
In a viral video, Soyinka described a recent encounter where he witnessed an unusually large security detail surrounding Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son. He criticized the extravagant display, saying it looked like an army ready to take over a small country. Soyinka expressed disbelief that a non-elected individual like Seyi should receive such protection, and he urged Tinubu to rethink the allocation of security resources.
He argued that Nigeria’s pressing security issues, such as insurgency and rural violence, demand more attention. Soyinka also called for stronger editorial discipline in the media, warning that misinformation could spark the next major conflict in the country.
