Quadri Aruna is back at the top, regaining his status as Africa’s highest-ranked table tennis player in the world. The Nigerian star has ascended to 18th place in the latest Week 12 ITTF rankings, surpassing Egypt’s Omar Medhat Assar.

Although he finished as runner-up at the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup, Quadri’s strong performances throughout the year at World Table Tennis (WTT) events have propelled him up the rankings. He remains the only African male player to reach the semi-finals of the WTT Contender Doha, a milestone he first achieved in 2023 and repeated earlier this year.

In contrast, while Omar Medhat Assar won the Africa Cup, his ranking dropped from 17th to 19th place. Denmark’s Jonathan Groth advanced to 17th, while Quadri climbed from 19th to 18th, solidifying his position as Africa’s top player.

Earlier this year, Quadri’s children—Mariam, Quadri Junior, and Amira—also made waves at the VIX João Monteiro Table Tennis Tournament in Portugal, clinching podium finishes while their father competed in Doha. With his recent ranking boost, the Aruna family continues to make a significant impact on the world of table tennis.
