A 47-year-old Nigerian man, Darlington Akporugo, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy in connection with a $3 million romance scam that targeted elderly victims across the U.S., according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
Operating from Houston, Akporugo and his accomplices used fake identities on social media to lure victims into fraudulent online relationships, convincing them to send money for fake business ventures and emergencies. Victims were also persuaded to open credit lines and, in one case, purchase a luxury vehicle for him.
Authorities revealed that over 25 victims, mostly elderly or retired, were defrauded in the scheme, with much of the stolen money funneled overseas. Akporugo was arrested a month before his wedding to Jasmin Sood, who was also implicated in the scam.
Akporugo faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will remain in custody until sentencing on June 6. Authorities urge other victims of romance scams to come forward.
