China’s Kaiwa Technology is developing a humanoid robot with the ability to carry a pregnancy using an integrated artificial womb, set for debut in 2026. The robot will manage the entire gestation process—from fertilization to birth—fully autonomously.
Led by Dr. Zhang Qifeng, the project builds on advances in artificial womb technology, which simulates a natural uterus environment with amniotic fluid and a synthetic umbilical cord. While similar systems have supported premature animals, Kaiwa’s humanoid robot represents a major leap forward with its interactive, human-like design.
Priced at about 100,000 yuan (£11,000), the robot offers a lower-cost alternative to surrogacy and addresses China’s rising infertility rates, marking a bold step in reproductive innovation.
