Jordan Henderson is leaving Ajax a year before his contract ends, the Dutch club confirmed on Thursday.
The former Liverpool and England midfielder, 35, joined Ajax in January 2024, just six months after a controversial move to Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, which drew criticism due to his past support for LGBTQ+ rights.
Despite the backlash, Henderson quickly became a key figure in Amsterdam, taking on the captain’s armband and helping Ajax recover from a poor season. Under his leadership, the club climbed back into Eredivisie title contention and secured Champions League qualification—though they lost the title after surrendering a nine-point lead with five games to go.
Ajax Technical Director Alex Kroes praised Henderson’s leadership and professionalism, calling him “a true captain on and off the pitch.”
Jordan Henderson expressed gratitude in a farewell statement: “Playing for this club was an honour; captaining it was even more special.”
He declined further comment out of respect for the recent tragic deaths of former teammate Diogo Jota and Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in Spain.
