‘Iwájú’: Nigeria-based ‘first-of-its-kind’ animated series premieres on Disney+

In a first of its kind ever in Africa, American film production giant, Walt Disney Animation Studios have announced the production of an upcoming animated mini-series called Iwájú.

According to producers Disney and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali Media, viewers are in for an exciting watch, as the original animated series is set in a “futuristic” Lagos, Nigeria.

Written by Adeola and Halima Hudson and directed by Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, the exciting story follows Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.

Co-founder of Kugali Media, Tolu Olowofoyekun, who worked on Iwájú as Cultural consultant, and co-partner, Hamid Ibrahim, a visual effect designer from Uganda, also spoke about the animation project.

Iwájú, which stars Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia, will stream on the Disney+ service.

Disney Plus is not in Nigeria but beginning April 22, the series will air for Nigerian viewers on the Disney channel on DSTV.
