House of Reps. Speaker withdraws Counter Subversion Bill

News

August 15, 2024

Following widespread public outcry, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has withdrawn the Counter Subversion Bill, which prescribed 10-year jail term for anyone who refused to sing the reintroduced national anthem, ‘Nigeria, we hail thee‘.

The speaker, in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Musa Krishi, explained that his decision came after extensive consultations with stakeholders and a careful assessment of the nation’s current circumstances.

In an earlier statement, Tajudeen had said that the Counter Subversion Bill, which was first read on July 23, 2024, was not targeted at any group of persons, as speculated in the media, but aimed at addressing subversive activities by associations, militias, cults and bandits, as obtainable in countries like United Kingdom, Spain, India, Turkey, Canada, and Australia.
