Benin President Talon Says Coup Attempt Foiled by Loyal Forces

Benin’s President Patrice Talon announced that government forces halted a coup attempt by soldiers in Cotonou. The violence broke out when soldiers claimed to have ousted the president on state television.

Talon’s loyal forces quickly regained control and cleared resistance. He called the coup attempt “treachery” and vowed justice.
This follows a rising trend of military takeovers in West Africa, though unexpected in Benin, where the last coup occurred over 50 years ago. A government spokesperson confirmed 14 arrests related to the attempt.
