The New Showmax series ‘FreeMen’ explores the Igbo Apprenticeship System

Showmax has released the official teaser for the upcoming documentary series based on the Igbo apprenticeship system titled Freeman.

The affluent businessman who contacts the parents of a young man they are taking under their care to learn a trade in the Freemen teaser explores the apprenticeship system.

It includes well-known Igbo businessmen such Bartholomew Duru Nwanguma with his son Peter Nwanguma, Dr. Anene Okeke, Dr. Cosmas Maduka nicknamed Coscharis, Obinna Iyiegbu, also called Obi Cubana, Ndubuisi Ekekwe, Okey Japan, and other well-known businesspeople. Throughout the series, they narrate their own tales and offer their opinions on how the Igbo apprenticeship system influenced their professional lives and helped them succeed as entrepreneurs.

Rapper Tobechukwu Ejiofor, commonly known as ILLBLiSS (King of Boys), co-produced the television series’ music and is involved in Freemen.

The project aims to exhibit Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, according to a press statement from MultiChoice’s executive head of content and West Africa channels, Busola Tejumola.

She said, “Freemen is a spotlight on our rich narrative and culture, more than just a documentary on the Igbo Apprenticeship System.” At Showmax, we are thrilled to be able to share the colourful tale of a system that has crossed cultural barriers to reach new parts of the nation and beyond.

Freemen’s director and co-producer, Daro Umaigba, also voiced his enthusiasm for the film. He declared: “With Freemen, we open a window into the world of the Igbo Apprenticeship System, giving viewers a close-up view of the development and nurturing of exceptional business minds.” In addition to serving as a showcase for the rich Igbo cultural legacy, this video is an invaluable tool for mentorship insights that company owners and aspiring entrepreneurs can obtain.

The documentary offers a thorough examination of the Igbo apprenticeship system and is divided into four unique sections. These sections, which each provide a different viewpoint on the apprentice trip, are the Pick-Up and Negotiations Period, Trial Period, Solidification of Agreement and Work Period, and Settlement Period.

Freemen will begin streaming exclusively on Showmax from February 12, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday.
