Nigerian singer Terry G stirred controversy after claiming he made it acceptable for artists to smoke cannabis on screen.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the “Free Madness” hitmaker wrote: “If not for my sacrifice, none of your faves would have the guts to smoke Igbo on screen.”

The statement quickly sparked backlash, with many pointing to Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, who openly smoked in the 1970s. Others cited Majek Fashek and Daddy Showkey as earlier artists known for rebellious, outspoken personas.

Terry G’s claim reignited conversations about influence, legacy, and cultural shifts in Nigerian music.
