Senegal has officially canceled Akon’s ambitious $6 billion plan to build a futuristic “Akon City” along its Atlantic coast, citing years of stalled progress and missed financial obligations by the Senegalese-American artist.

Originally unveiled in 2020, the project promised a tech-powered smart city inspired by Black Panther’s Wakanda, featuring solar energy, high-tech infrastructure, and Akon’s own cryptocurrency. The planned site in Mbodiène, a quiet coastal village, was expected to transform into a cutting-edge urban hub.

However, five years on, little has materialized beyond a youth center, basketball court, and an information booth. The government has now reclaimed most of the 136 acres allocated to Akon, after construction failed to begin and funding commitments went unmet.

“That project no longer exists,” confirmed Serigne Mamadou Mboup, head of SAPCO, the national agency in charge of tourism development.

According to Bloomberg, SAPCO will now move forward with a smaller, state-supported tourism project in the area, valued at $1.2 billion and funded primarily through private investment. Akon will retain just 8 hectares, which will be integrated into the new plan.

Despite the setback, officials say the revised project could create up to 15,000 jobs in its first phase, offering renewed economic potential for the local community.
