English Premier League clubs voted on Thursday to continue using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for the upcoming season, despite ongoing controversies and criticisms.

The decision was made at the Premier League’s annual general meeting, where 19 out of the 20 clubs voted in favor of retaining the technology.

According to the BBC, Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) were the only club to vote against the system, having called for the vote to scrap VAR last month.

Introduced in 2019, VAR was designed to assist referees in avoiding clear and obvious errors that could influence the outcome of matches. However, the technology has been a source of numerous disputes, particularly during the recently concluded 2023/24 season. Both managers and fans have frequently expressed their dissatisfaction with VAR, citing inconsistent decisions and disruptions to the flow of the game.

Despite these issues, the Premier League acknowledged the need for enhancements to the system following the vote. “While VAR produces more accurate decision making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and supporters,” the league said in a statement.
