NYSC Denies Extending Rita’s Service Year Over Tinubu Criticism

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied extending the service year of Lagos corps member Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, over her past criticism of President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State.

Rita went viral months ago for condemning economic hardship under the current administration and describing Lagos as “smelling” with “poor living conditions.” She later alleged on TikTok that NYSC officials had threatened her.

On June 24, activist Yele Sowore claimed NYSC had extended her service by two months as punishment and vowed to protest at her passing out parade. He warned the administration could be “brought down” by the issue.

However, NYSC spokesperson Carol Embu refuted the claims, stating that service year extensions only occur at the point of discharge—and Rita hasn’t reached that stage.

“She’s still serving,” Embu said. “We follow due process. NYSC is not an irresponsible organisation.”
