Nigerian will have only one representative in the group stage of CAF inter-club competitions this season.
Enyimba Football Club of Aba qualified for the group stage of this season’s CAF Confederation Cup after a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Etoile de Filante of Burkina Faso in Uyo on Sunday, but the reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions, Enugu Rangers, failed to make the group stage of the CAF Champions League, after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Angolan club Sagrada Esperanca of Angola.
They had won the first leg 1-0 in Uyo before falling to a 3-1 defeat in Angola yesterday.
Nigerian clubsides have competed in the Champions League four times and have never made it to the mini-league phase, where prize money of $800,000 is awarded to this season’s qualifiers.
The other Nigerian qualifiers for the premier African club competition this season, Remo Stars, lost to Moroccan side FAR Rabat in the first round last month.
