Lorde’s new album Virgin has received an unexpected nod of approval from rapper Jack Harlow. The 28-year-old singer recently spoke with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about the creative journey and inspirations behind the upcoming release.
During the interview, Lorde shared a memorable moment with Harlow, 27, while working at New York’s Electric Lady Studios. “Jack was around when we were finishing the record, and somehow he got to hear most of the album,” she recalled. “It was a really cool and funny connection.”
Describing Harlow’s reaction, she added, “He told me, ‘Your bars—these are bars.’ And I was like, ‘That’s your words, not mine.’ He’s such a sweetheart.”
Lorde also revealed her aim to inject a sense of rhythm and liveliness into Virgin, explaining, “There’s this rolling cadence and physicality to the album. I’m trying to make myself laugh, raise an eyebrow, and just keep it feeling alive.”
The upcoming album, Lorde’s fourth studio project, also explores her evolving gender identity. In a previous interview with Rolling Stone, she opened up about conversations with fellow artist Chappell Roan regarding her gender. “She asked if I’m nonbinary now. I told her I’m a woman except on days when I feel like a man. It’s not a clear answer, but I resist boxing myself in,” she said.
Virgin is set to drop on Friday, June 27.
