The Lagos State Government has banned the use and distribution of single-use plastics, such as Styrofoam, in the state.
Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who made this known in a statement yesterday, said the decision was in response to the environmental threat posed by single-use plastics, particularly non-biodegradable styrofoams, adding that the state’s drainage channels were constantly clogged by the material, due to its careless distribution and consumption.
He added that the Kick Against Indiscipline agency and the Waste Management Authority should clamp down on all Styrofoam manufacturers and distributors in the state to avoid further usage.
Wahab further advised residents and consumers to adopt the habit of utilizing reusable water bottles and food containers for their food and beverages, so as to ultimately avoid the consequences of indiscriminate dumping of single use plastics, like flooding, climate change, and diseases like cholera.
