UK Conservative minister Kemi Badenoch has reaffirmed that she no longer identifies as Nigerian, emphasizing her primary identity as British despite her Nigerian heritage and upbringing.
In a GB News interview shared Tuesday on TikTok, Badenoch stated, “My main identity is as British… Nigeria is a nationality, not an ethnicity,” adding that there’s no single “Nigerian” language due to the country’s ethnic diversity.
She argued that politicians should focus on domestic issues rather than foreign affairs, saying, “If you’re a politician, you need to be 100% focused on British issues.”
This follows her August 1 remarks on the Rosebud podcast, where she revealed she hadn’t renewed her Nigerian passport in over 20 years and does not identify as Nigerian by identity, though she maintains ties to the country through ancestry and family.
Badenoch was among the last to receive UK birthright citizenship before the 1981 law change under Margaret Thatcher.
