Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as leader of Canada’s governing party, after nearly a decade as Prime Minister.
Speaking at a news conference in Ottawa, Trudeau says he will stay on however as Prime Minister until a new Liberal Party leader is chosen.
Trudeau, who had been under growing pressure from within his party and elsewhere to step down, goes on to say that’s why the country needs a new session of parliament, and all proceedings, debates and votes will be suspended in the parliament, until March 24.
