The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is proposing to replace Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) with downloadable voters’ card, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Special Adviser to the INEC chairman, Mohammad Kuna, who disclosed this yesterday in his presentation at a retreat with the Joint Committee of the National Assembly on Electoral Matters on the reform of the electoral legal framework, indicated that INEC is proposing amendments to Nigeria’s electoral framework that would strip the President of the power to appoint the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in charge of the INEC office at the state level, and confer the power on the commission, who would instead be known as State Directors of Elections.

Among the proposals, INEC is seeking amendments to Sections of the 1999 Constitution to enable Nigerians abroad, inmates, and election personnel to participate in the voting process.
