Nigerian sprinter and 150m world record holder, Favour Ofili, has reportedly switched her sporting allegiance to Turkey, just months before the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

According to reports, the 22-year-old athlete informed the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) that her decision was not financially motivated, but stemmed from her long-standing dissatisfaction with how Nigerian athletics officials had handled her career.

Ofili, who holds personal bests of 10.93 seconds in the 100m and 21.96 seconds in the 200m, reportedly referenced her exclusion from the 100m event at the 2024 Paris Olympics and her absence from the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to administrative lapses as key reasons for the decision.

President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Tonobok Okowa, expressed shock at the report but said the federation won’t stop Ofili from switching her nationality to Turkey.

He added that the federation was yet to get any official statement from her or any correspondence from World Athletics (WA) regarding the switch.
