Actress and former BBNaija housemate Erica Nlewedim faced criticism after a video showed her struggling with her native Igbo language. The clip sparked harsh reactions from some social media users, including members of the Igbo community who mocked her fluency and questioned her identity.

Erica responded directly to the backlash on Twitter, calling out what she described as deep-rooted self-hate within the Igbo community.
“Look at my Igbo people in the comments showing how much they hate their own! Continue but please don’t complain when others don’t show you love,” she wrote. “You can’t be so openly divided against your own people and expect trust from outsiders!”
When a user joked about her struggling with the language, she replied, “Don’t you think it’s foolish for someone to choose to become your enemy because you can’t speak a language? You don’t even see other tribes insulting themselves for not speaking their language. They are united!”
Erica also questioned the readiness to shame members of the community over language fluency, tweeting, “Is it your first instinct to insult someone who is [from your tribe] but can’t speak the language? And use words like pig, bitch, shame etc? Of course not! We on the other hand need to learn love and unity.”

Some social media users supported Erica’s message, while others felt she unnecessarily brought other ethnic groups into the conversation. One user commented that her point “could have made the same point without dragging anyone else.”
