Drake and Kendrick Lamar both made headlines on Sunday, but from different corners of the world.
While performing in Melbourne, Australia, on February 9, Drake surprised fans with generous cash giveaways. The 38-year-old rapper spotted a sign in the crowd reading “Adonis for President” — a nod to his 7-year-old son — and decided to reward the fan.
“You’re showing a lot of love to my son,” Drake said in a fan-recorded video on TikTok. “On behalf of me and Adonis, we’re giving you $25,000 for your family.”
He then noticed another sign that read, “Kiss Me It’s My Birthday” and gifted the fan $20,000, along with covering a birthday dinner for her and her friends. Later, according to Billboard, Drake expressed gratitude to his audience. “Through everything, you still take your hard-earned money and spend it on a ticket to see this kid from Canada get up here and talk. I really appreciate you. I would be nothing without you,” he said.
Meanwhile, on the same night, Kendrick Lamar took the stage at the Super Bowl Halftime Show during the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Pulitzer Prize-winning artist delivered a set of his biggest hits, closing with “Not Like Us,” a Grammy-winning diss track directed at Drake.
Before launching into the song, Lamar, 37, made a pointed remark: “I want to play their favorite song, but you know they love to sue,” seemingly referencing Drake’s lawsuit against Lamar and Universal Music Group. The lawsuit alleged that Lamar defamed him by implying inappropriate behavior in Not Like Us. However, Lamar omitted that particular lyric during the live performance.
Adding another layer to his performance, Lamar sported a necklace featuring a lowercase “a,” possibly referencing the line in Not Like Us, “Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.”
Drake’s legal team has firmly denied the accusations, stating in legal documents, “Drake has never engaged in sexual relations with a minor” and “Drake has never been charged with, or convicted of, any criminal acts whatsoever.” Universal Music Group also rejected the claims, saying, “Not only are these allegations false, but the idea that we would seek to harm Drake’s reputation is illogical. We have made significant investments in his career and success.”
During his halftime show, Lamar also brought out tennis legend Serena Williams, whom Drake briefly dated in 2011. His high-energy set included performances of HUMBLE., Squabble Up, and peekaboo. SZA, a longtime collaborator and another former Drake flame, joined him on stage for luther and All The Stars.
