Sean “Diddy” Combs, 55, received a standing ovation from fellow inmates after being acquitted on July 2 of the most serious charges against him — sex trafficking and racketeering — which carried potential life sentences.

According to his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, inmates saw the verdict as a rare victory against the government. “They all said, ‘We never get to see anyone who beats the government,’” he told PEOPLE.

Despite the acquittals, Diddy was convicted on two lesser counts related to transporting individuals for prostitution, which could still result in up to 20 years in prison if sentenced consecutively.

Combs, who has been held without bail since September 2024, will remain at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center until his sentencing on October 3.

The trial, which began in May, featured 34 prosecution witnesses over 29 days, including Combs’ ex-partner, Cassie Ventura. Prosecutors alleged she was coerced into elaborate sex acts, while the defense maintained all encounters were consensual and backed by text message evidence.

Though cleared of the gravest charges, Combs still faces numerous civil lawsuits over alleged sexual misconduct.
