Hollywood actor Gary Busey has admitted guilt to a single charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, acknowledging that he inappropriately touched a fan during a 2022 event.
The 81-year-old made his plea during a virtual court session presided over by Judge Gwendolyn Blue, according to reporting from Court TV.
The charge originates from an incident at the Monster-Mania Convention, held at the Doubletree Hotel in Camden, New Jersey. Busey had been accused of groping two women during a photo op. While he had earlier denied any wrongdoing, he has now admitted the touching was deliberate.
“It was not an accidental touching,” Busey said when asked by Judge Blue to clarify the nature of the contact.
Under a plea deal, prosecutors have agreed to dismiss several additional charges, including three other counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact and one count of attempted fourth-degree criminal sexual contact.
Busey, known for his performances in films such as Lethal Weapon and Under Siege, could now face a sentence ranging from one to five years of probation, along with monetary fines. His sentencing will be conducted virtually next month.
During the proceedings, Busey’s lawyer, Blair Zwillman, sought to have the indictment thrown out, arguing that the police investigation was flawed and that not all relevant witnesses had been interviewed. Judge Blue dismissed the motion, stating that the grand jury had been presented with proper witness testimony.
In previous public statements, Busey had denied the allegations, insisting “nothing happened” and suggesting the interaction lasted less than 10 seconds. He has also been involved in past controversies, including incidents of erratic public behavior.
