Baltasar Engonga, the former Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea, is facing up to 18 years in prison after appearing in court in Malabo on corruption charges.

Engonga has been held at Black Beach Prison since September 2024 amid investigations into alleged corruption, separate from a scandal involving over 400 explicit videos found at his residence linked to prominent women.
He is charged with embezzlement alongside other former top officials. Prosecutors revealed a complex scheme to siphon public funds for personal benefit, orchestrated during Engonga’s leadership of the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance between 2015 and 2020.
According to Le Bled Parle, the national prosecutor is demanding a harsh sentence: eight years for embezzlement, over four years for illicit enrichment, and more than six years for abuse of power.
In addition to imprisonment, Engonga faces a fine exceeding 910 million CFA francs (around $1.5 million) and a ban on holding public office for the duration of his sentence.
