Authorities in Rio de Janeiro have arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged bomb threat ahead of Lady Gaga’s historic concert on Copacabana Beach, which drew a record-breaking crowd of approximately 2.5 million people.
According to reports from The Guardian, a man and a teenager were taken into custody just hours before the free concert on Saturday, May 3. Investigators believe the suspects were plotting coordinated attacks using homemade explosives, with Brazil’s LGBTQIA+ community as the intended target.
The Civil Police of Rio stated during a May 4 press briefing that they had been monitoring online activity linked to plans for a potential bombing at the event, involving Molotov cocktails and improvised devices. Authorities said the suspects aimed to recruit others at the concert to help carry out the attacks.

While the threat loomed in the background, Lady Gaga, 39, remained unaware of the situation until it was reported by the media, her team told The Hollywood Reporter. “We learned of the alleged threat through media reports this morning,” her spokesperson said. “There were no safety alerts or communications from local authorities to Lady Gaga before or during the show.”
The representative emphasized that Gaga’s team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the concert’s planning and execution, and all parties were confident in the event’s security arrangements.
Despite the disturbing allegations, the concert went ahead without incident. The performance not only marked Gaga’s largest audience ever but also set a new record for the most attended concert by a female artist in history.
The main suspect was reportedly charged with illegal possession of firearms, while the teenager faces child pornography-related charges following coordinated police raids across 15 locations.
