Nollywood actress, Beverly Naya, has revealed that she considered giving up acting after dealing with cyberbullying.
In an interview with well-known media personality Chude Jideonwo, Naya talked candidly about how the constant criticism she encountered in her work had an impact on her mental health and how she felt “singled out”.
The actor emphasised that she thought about resigning because of the frequent attacks. “I thought, ‘Why am I always being singled out?’ I felt like I was being attacked again.'” I was so affected that I didn’t want to stay in this field and it undermined my self-worth and self-doubt.”
She described an intensely personal post that someone had made about her, bringing tears to her eyes.
“There was a particular post that I can never forget, they said ‘Nollywood can we stop trying to make Beverly Naya happen,'” the speaker added, narrating how the comments broke her down.
Upon witnessing it, I was devastated and sobbed uncontrollably. I was upset since I thought I had put in a lot of work. Even though I’m not perfect now, I was eager to push myself at the time, and I felt like I gave it my all, only to be rejected, ignored, and ignored. That was a time when I was on the verge of depression.”
Beverly Naya has appeared in notable Nollywood movies like Forgetting June, The Wedding Party, When Love Happens, and Across the Rising Sun, amongst many others. She also won an AMVCA for Best Documentary for her film, Skin.
