For the first time since 1992, a British singer is number 1 on the US R&B chart.
Ella Mai is from south London and she currently has the number one spot on the US & R&B chart with Boo'd Up. An official remix of the song was released earlier in July and features Nicki Minaj and Quavo, while various artists like T-Pain, Fetty Wap, Fabolous, Plies, and more have created versions of the track. Boo’d Up is currently number 5 on the Billboard 100 chart.
The last Brit to hit number 1 on the US R&B chart was Lisa Stansfield with All Woman in 1992.
“1992, before i was born. first in my lifetime. INSANE” Ella tweeted after being told the news. Lisa Stansfield also congratulated the 23 year old on Twitter.
Fellow Brits Charli XCX, Paul McCartney and Kyla have recently appeared as featured artists on US R&B number ones, but Ella Mai is the first to reach the peak as a lead artist for 26 years.
